A Painted House - John Grisham [Novel - 2001]

Label: , , , , , ,

The story begins to unfold as Luke and his grandfather Eli, also known as Pappy, search for migrant workers to help them with the cotton picking. They initially consider themselves lucky to hire the Spruills, a family of "hill people," and a few Mexican migrant workers who annually come to the area looking for work.
Aside from working long hours under the hot sun in the fields, Luke's life is fairly idyllic until he sees the overly aggressive and mentally unstable Hank Spruill attack three boys from the notorious Sisco family, one of whom is beaten so severely he dies from his wounds. Hank arrogantly identifies Luke as a friendly witness who can support his version of the event, and the fearful boy backs up his story, although the adults in his life, including local sheriff Stick Powers, suspect he's too frightened to admit the truth.
When Luke sees Cowboy, one of the Mexicans, later murder Hank and toss his body into the river, Cowboy threatens to kill Luke's mother if Luke tells anyone what he saw. Cowboy and Tally, the teenage daughter of the Spruills, then run off together and are not seen again. Luke also learns that his admired Uncle Ricky, fighting in the Korean War, may have fathered a child with a daughter of the Latchers, their poverty-stricken sharecropping neighbors.

Body Language: How to read others’ thoughts by their gestures - Allan Pease [PDF - 1981]

Label: , , , ,

This book introduces body language from the point of view of business executives. The authors specialize in the use of body language for business and politics. I found the illustrations and photos that accompany the text to be very funny and appropriate. This is not a very scholarly book, so if you're looking for a very serious and academic book about the study of body language, then this isn't the volume you're looking for, but if you'd just like an introduction to body language from a practical point of view, then this is a perfect book to read. In addition, it is very easy and entertaining to read, so I can recommend this to anyone.

Anna Karenina - Leo Tolstoy [Txt - 1877]

Label: , , , , , ,

Anna Karenina tells of the doomed love affair between the sensuous and rebellious Anna and the dashing officer, Count Vronsky. Tragedy unfolds as Anna rejects her passionless marriage and must endure the hypocrisies of society. Set against a vast and richly textured canvas of nineteenth-century Russia, the novel's seven major characters create a dynamic imbalance, playing out the contrasts of city and country life and all the variations on love and family happiness. While previous versions have softened the robust, and sometimes shocking, quality of Tolstoy's writing, Pevear and Volokhonsky have produced a translation true to his powerful voice. This award-winning team's authoritative edition also includes an illuminating introduction and explanatory notes. Beautiful, vigorous, and eminently readable, this Anna Karenina will be the definitive text for generations to come.

Hidden History of the Human Race - Michael A. Cremo & Richard L. Thompson [PDF - 1999]

Label: , , , , , ,

Over the centuries, researchers have found bones and artifacts proving that humans like us have existed for millions of years. Mainstream science, however, has suppressed these facts. Prejudices based on current scientific theory act as a 'knowledge filter', giving us a picture of prehistory that is largely incorrect.

Stupid White Men: .. and other sorry excuses for the state of the nation! - Michael Moore [PDF - 2002]

Label: , , , , ,

Michael Moore is America's favourite thorn in the side. With his patented blend of comic provocation and serious advocacy, Moore issues his own Sorry State of the Nation address. In STUPID WHITE MEN, he provides a much-needed alternative to the steady, "let's-line-up-behind-the-President" drumbeat of today's commentators. Few have been willing to speak out with a different point of view lately - until now. Michael Moore is proud to be an American and believes that the strength of a democracy is seen by how well it insures the fullest possible discussion of the issues of the day. Starting with the farcical shenanigans surrounding the November 2000 coup - er, election - in Florida, he reviews the collection of corporate-friendly career politicians George W Bush has chosen to prop up his administration, and confronts Bush in a comic, yet thought-provoking open letter. He takes on issues as diverse as global warming, commercialism in schools, and even the continuing spectre of racism in US society. He challenges Yasser Arafat to mount a campaign of non-violent civil disobedience, challenges employers to hire only black people, even challenges the male gender to clean up its act if men are going to avoid extinction. From the hapless presidency of George W to the sloppy explosion of the tech-stock bubble to the consumer debt epidemic - from the spread of mad-cow disease to Bush's scorched-earth environmental policy - America is collapsing into a political, ethical, fianancial and physical slag heap and Moore leaves no radioactive stone unturned along the way. Entertaining and astonishing in equal measure, STUPID WHITE MEN is the latest and most powerful in Michael Moore's series of acts of satirical subversion, sure to cause controversy.

It explores conceptual frameworks and methodological approaches applicable in the research covering the State, globalisation, equity, education, and social justice. It demonstrates the neo-liberal ideological imperatives of education and policy reforms, and illustrates the way the relationship between the State and education policy affects current models and trends in education reforms for social justice and schooling globally. Various book chapters critique the dominant discourses and debates pertaining to the politics of social justice and education globally and the newly constructed and re-invented models of neo-liberal ideology in education and policy reforms. Using a number of diverse paradigms in comparative education research, ranging from critical theory to post-structuralist discourses, the authors, by focusing on globalisation, social justice and democracy, attempt to examine critically both the reasons and outcomes of education reforms and policy change for social justice. The volume offers a more informed critique on the Western-driven models of education reforms and implications for social justice. The book also draws upon recent studies in the areas of equity, cultural capital and dominant ideologies in education. The general intention is to make Globalization, Education and Social Justice available to a broad spectrum of users among policy-makers, academics, graduate students, education policy researchers, administrators, and practitioners in the education and related professions.

Bloodlines of the Illuminati - Fritz Springmeier [Txt - 2005]

Label: , , , ,

The book touches on a few elements of truth - such as the fact that the U.S. government really did embark on an unethical and insane research projects called MK-ULTRA and Project Monarch. Most of the evidence of that project was destroyed by Richard Helms, however there is enough hard evidence that exists which proves at least some of the claimed activities took place.
Unfortunately, just like the Remote Viewing government project, most surreal research that takes place by the U.S. government generates an entire army of "believers" who latch on to those paranormal topics. These people have a conviction of the reality of the phenomenon or event, bolstered by the fact that the U.S. government was - at least at one point - interested in it.
Springmeier launches his claims upon the MK-ULTRA activities, at least in part. Most of the book is a history lesson with both historic fact and baseless speculation interwoven into a new and surreal altered reality, where you are no longer sure what is "real" history and what has simply been filled in by Springmeier.

  • Key cases in education law, including both case summaries and topical overviews
  • Constitutional issues
  • Key concepts, theories, and legal principles
  • Key statutes
  • Treaties (e.g., the Universal Declaration on Human Rights)
  • Curricular issues
  • Educational equity
  • Governance
  • Rights of students and teachers
  • Technology

  • Organizations
In addition to these broad categories, anchor essays by leading experts in education law provide more detailed examination of selected topics. The Encyclopedia also includes selections from key legal documents such as the Constitution and federal statutes that serve as the primary sources for research on education law. At the same time, since education law is a component in a much larger legal system, the Encyclopedia includes entries on the historical development of the law that impact on its subject matter. Such a broadened perspective places education law in its proper context in the U.S. legal system.

Educating the Engineer of 2020: Adapting Engineering Education to the New Century [PDF - 2005]

Label: , , ,

The Engineer of 2020 Project centers on an effort to envision the future two decades from now, to use this knowledge in an attempt to predict the roles engineers will play in the future, and to position engineering education in the United States for what lies ahead, rather than waiting for time to pass and then trying to respond. It is driven by concern that engineering students of today may not be appropriately educated to meet the demands that will be placed on the engineer of 2020 and that, without refocusing and reshaping the undergraduate engineering learning experience, America’s engineering preeminence could be lost. It takes as a given that the nation’s societal goals will not be met absent a robust engineering community in the country. It asks what restructuring of program, reallocation of resources, and refocusing of faculty and professional society time and energy are required so that our educational infrastructure can educate engineers prepared to tackle the challenges of the future. It questions how we can more effectively share with students—current and potential—our passion for designing systems, structures, and devices to solve problems and our conviction that engineering is a profession that offers rich rewards for serving the interests of society.

China's War on Terrorism: Counter-Insurgency, Politics, and Internal Security - Martin I. Wayne [PDF - 2008]

Label: , , , ,

China’s war on terror is among its most prominent and least understood of campaigns. With links to the global jihad, an indigenous insurgency threatens the government’s grip on a massive region of northwestern China known as Xinjiang. Riots, bombings, ambushes, and assassinations have rocked the region under separatist and Islamist banners. China acted early and forcefully, and although brutal, their efforts represent one of the few successes in the global struggle against Islamist terrorism.
The effectiveness of this campaign has raised questions regarding whether China genuinely confronts a terrorist threat. In this book, based on extensive fieldwork, Martin Wayne investigates China’s counter-insurgency effort, highlighting the success of an approach centred on reshaping local society and government institutions. At the same time, he raises the question of what the United States may be able to learn from China’s approach, and argues that as important a case as Xinjiang needs to be fully examined in order for terrorism to be defeated.
This book will be of interest to students of China, Asian politics, terrorism, and security studies in general.

A Peaceful Jihad: Negotiating Identity and Modernity in Muslim Java (Contemporary Anthropology of Religion) - Ronald Lukens [PDF - 2005]

Label: , , , , ,

Based on extensive ethnographic research, A Peaceful Jihad examines how the Islamic community in Java, Indonesia, is actively negotiating both modernity and tradition in the contexts of nation-building, globalization, and a supposed clash of civilizations. The pesantren community, so-called because it is centered around an educational institution called the pesantren, uses education as a central arena for dealing with globalization and the construction and maintenance of an Indonesian Islamic identity. However, the community's efforts to wrestle with these issues extend beyond education into the public sphere in general and specifically in the area of leadership and politics. The case material is used to understand Muslim strategies and responses to civilizational contact and conflict. This work is a must-have for scholars, educated readers, and advanced undergraduates interested in Islam, religious education, and the construction of religious identity in the context of national politics and globalization.

Al Qaeda's Jihad in Europe: The Afghan-Bosnian Network - Evan F. Kohlman [PDF - 2004]

Label: , , , , , , ,

Why did so many of the 9/11 hijackers spend time in Germany? How did terrorist sleeper cells plant themselves in cities like London, Paris, Rome, and Hamburg? What exactly is Al-Qaida's connection to Europe?

Terrorism analyst Evan F. Kohlmann unveils a new angle to the deadly international terrorist organization and reveals the root of its terror lies in the Bosnian War. He includes recently declassified American and European intelligence reports, secret Al-Qaida records and internal documents, and interviews with notorious figures such as London-based Bin Laden sympathizer Abu Hamza Al-Masri. A Larger Sense of Purpose: Higher Education and Society – Harold T. Shapiro [PDF - 2005]

Label: , , , ,

Universities were once largely insular institutions whose purview extended no further than the campus gates. Not anymore. Today’s universities have evolved into multifaceted organizations with complex connections to government, business, and the community. This thought-provoking book by Harold Shapiro, former president of both Princeton University and the University of Michigan, and Chairman of the National Bioethics Advisory Commission under President Bill Clinton, explores the role the modern university should play as an ethical force and societal steward.
Based on the 2003 Clark Kerr lectures, A Larger Sense of Purpose draws from Shapiro’s twenty-five years of experience leading major research universities and takes up key topics of debate in higher education. What are the nature and objectives of a liberal education? How should universities address the increasing commercialization not only of intercollegiate sports but of education and research? What are the university’s responsibilities for the moral education of students?
The book begins with an expanded history of the modern research institution followed by essays on ethics, the academic curriculum, the differences between private and public higher education, the future of intellectual property rights, and the changing relationship between the nation’s universities and the for-profit sector. Shapiro calls for universities to be more accountable morally as well as academically. He urges scientists not only to educate others about the potential and limitations of science but also to acknowledge the public’s distress over the challenges presented by the very success of the scientific enterprise. He advocates for a more intimate connection between professional training and the liberal arts–in the hope that future doctors, lawyers, and business executives will be educated in ethics and the social sciences as well as they are in anatomy, torts, and leveraged buyouts.
Candid, timely, and provocative, A Larger Sense of Purpose demands the attention of not only those in academics but of anyone who shares an interest in the soul of education.

Agency, Structure, and International Politics: From Ontology to Empirical Inquiry – Gil Friedman and Harvey Starr [PDF - 1997]

Label: , , , , , ,

What is it about the way back that makes it seem shorter? Most likely it is the familiarity and the increased understanding that we acquire along the way out.

This study began as a circumscribed critique of Alexander Wendt’s discussion of various ontological, epistemological, and methodological dimensions of the everillusive “agent-structure problem,” and of Wendt and Dessler’s claim that structuration theory represents a progressive research program for the study of international relations. We believed that the works of these scholars were limited and weakened by their omission of earlier contributions to the international politics agent-structure problem. These were initially presented in the work of Harold and Margaret Sprout, later revised and popularized in the work of Harvey Starr and his collaborators, especially the publications with Benjamin A.Most. Through the opportunity and willingness framework, Starr had devoted fruitful attention to the agent-structure problem for over a decade prior to the work of Wendt and Dessler.

Africa’s Challenge to International Relations Theory – Kevin C. Dunn & Timothy M. Shaw [PDF - 2001]

Label: , , , , , ,

Africa has been noticeably absent in international relations theory. This new collection of essays by contemporary Africanists convincingly demonstrates the importance of the continent to every theoretical approach in international relations. This collection breaks new ground in how we think about both international relations and Africa, re-examining such foundational concepts as sovereignty, the state, and power; critically investigating the salience of realism, neo-liberalism, liberalism in Africa, and providing new thinking about regionalism, security and identity.

Richard Ned Lebow – A Cultural Theory of International Relations [PDF - 2008]

Label: , , , ,

In this exciting new volume, Richard Ned Lebow introduces his own constructivist theory of political order and international relations based on theories of motives and identity formation drawn fromthe ancientGreeks.
His theory stresses the human need for self-esteem, and shows howit influences political behavior at every level of social aggregation. Lebow develops ideal-type worlds associated with fourmotives: appetite, spirit, reason and fear, and demonstrates how each generates a different logic concerning cooperation, conflict and risk-taking. Expanding and documenting the utility of his theory in a series of historical case studies, ranging from classical Greece to the war in Iraq, he presents a novel explanation for the rise of the state and the causes of war, and offers a reformulation of prospect theory. This is a novel theory of politics by one of the world’s leading scholars of international relations.
